Miguel “Mikey” Devante was the Vulcan’s sidekick, operating as the Son of Vulcan, until his mentor died and he stepped into a bigger role. His powers originated thousands of years ago when the White Martians created a metavirus that can be passed on by touch. It empowered the first Son of Vulcan, and was then passed on to others.

Mikey debuted in Son of Vulcan Vol. 2 #1 (August 2005), created by Scott Beatty and Keron Grant. Through the metavirus, he can produce intense heat from any part of his body, and he wears a special suit of Vulcan armor that can manifest dimensional portals and has gauntlets that create an energy shield.

He was an orphan when he first encountered Vulcan/Erich Thonius while being held hostage by the Floronic Man at Big Belly Burger. Vulcan arrived on the scene and told Mikey to help free the hostages while he fought the Floronic Man. Once they were freed, Mikey stayed to help Vulcan, saving him by cutting off the Floronic Man’s arm with a sword. Seeing his potential, Vulcan took Mikey from the orphanage to come live at the Forge of the Vulcans and train as his successor.

The pair fought the White Martian A’morr and she killed Erich, passing the Flame of Vulcan onto Mikey. When Mikey returned to the Forge, the Vulcan’s android Pandora learned of Vulcan’s death, then went to the scene of the event to get the sword and helmet. Praetor, the Forge’s computer system, did not believe that Mikey was worthy to become Vulcan, so it ejected him into space, but Pandora saved him.

Mikey was then attacked by the Coalition of Crime at the original Vulcan’s funeral. Barney Blaine, a previous Son of Vulcan helped him win the fight, then revealed to Mikey how the White Martians had created the metavirus that gave them powers. Vulcan fought the White Martian A’monn A’mokk and he destroyed A’morr. He restored Pandora and they moves to San Francisco to operate there, and later he joined the Titans East.
