Mickey Mouse Adventures #10 On Sale Is!
and ducks, you tend to start reading each story in a silly frame of mind —
implicitly expecting an adventure more exaggerated than any real-life experience
could be. But it’s precisely that level of exaggeration that allows us to best
mock the ironies of our own existence… and poke fun at the silly side of pop
culture trends! For a few classic examples, grab Mickey Mouse Adventures
#10, a $7.95, 128-page manga format book on sale now!
The spoofs get
started with our cover story: “May the Farce Be With You,” written by Pat and
Carol McGreal and drawn by Massimo Fecchi. When a Gyro Gearloose gadget
literally sends Mickey and Donald into their favorite Star Force
sci-fi flick, dozens of George Lucas creations come in for a drubbing. When you
stop to think about it, don’t even the greatest fantasy movies ask us to
take rather… silly concepts for granted? You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! And
you’ll wonder how you ever swallowed the notions of lightsabers,
British-accented robots, and warlike teddy bears without groaning.
Next up in
our string of parodies is “Healthy Choice,” pairing Fecchi’s art with the
superlative scripting of John Blair Moore. This time we’re mocking the dark side
of big business… an ever-inviting target that reveals far too much about human
nature! When Donald and Gyro Gearloose invent a cure for the common cold, Uncle
Scrooge comes out against it — as it might undermine his local monopoly on cold
medicine. Thus begins a sales war like you’ve never seen, replete with elements
of the real-life ad world’s most famous marketing campaigns!
Our third story
takes a break from satire to give us Mickey at his most classically adventurous.
Bruno Sarda’s “Double Danger” finds Mickey and Minnie in Rattistan, a Far
Eastern province where Minnie looks remarkably like the reigning queen. Before
you can say “Mark Twain,” she’s drafted to impersonate her by wanna-be rebels —
and an elaborate series of subterfuges begins. To avoid entrapment,
imprisonment, and assassination, Mickey and Minnie must move fast and think
faster!
We move back to satire with our concluding short: “Foxy Hunters,” a
Pluto and Ellsworth tale by fan favorites Romano Scarpa and Giorgio Cavazzano.
Ellsworth the smart-aleck mynah bird is an “animal” in Mickey’s world: although
he wears clothes and boasts a Yale education, he can still fly and speak “bird”
as well as English. When Ellsworth joins in a very human fox hunt with Pluto as
his “horse,” it’s the nature of funny animal comics themselves that gets
spindled. Join us, won’t you?
