Actor Michael B. Jordan, known for powerful performances in Black Panther and Creed, among other movies, has signed on to produce a Static Shock movie based on the DC character. He will produce through his production company Outlier Society, which has a first look deal with Warner Bros. Pictures. Jordan will be working with Milestone Media’s Reginald Hudlin.

Static/Virgil Hawkins is a teenager who becomes a superhero with electromagnetic powers after being exposed to chemical gas. If the movie is successful it could lead to a multi-platform franchise.

“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around Black superheroes; our community deserves that,” Jordan said in a statement. “Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros. on this initial step.”

Static was created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek Dingle. He was introduced in 1993 through Milestone Comics, the company created by Black writers and artists to bring more inclusivity to comics. It ran for 45 issues through ’97, followed by Static Shock animated series and comics at DC.

News on casting, writers, and director or release date were not announced.
