Many Disney comics readers have a soft spot for Gyro Gearloose, the gawky
inventor of nearly flawless gadgetry. As of this past Wednesday (April 6), a
special Gemstone treat for Gyro’s fans has rolled into comics shops. It’s
Donald Duck Adventures Take-Along Comic 11 — a $7.95, 128-page manga
format book holding three state-of-the-art Disney adventures.

The book
doesn’t get to our “suuuper genius” right away. Instead we open up with “The Eye
of Ra,” written by Eddie O’Connor and drawn by José Maria Manrique. When
Donald Duck destroys an Egyptian pyramid model at a Legoland-like theme park,
his fat’s in the fire. But rescue comes in the form of a real trip to Egypt —
and a rare gem search with Dezzi Digger, Daisy’s archaeologist relative. Donald
quickly obtains the priceless opal that they seek; but nothing’s ever simple for
Donald Duck, as three very dangerous crooks are on his trail!

DDA
11’s next opus is “The Mouse in the Iron Mask,” written by Michael T. Gilbert
(Mr. Monster) and drawn by Joaquín Cañizares Sanchez. While
out hiking with Minnie’s niece Katy, Mickey tumbles into an ancient tribal cave
— where a spill of some centuries-old chemicals plays havoc with his eyesight.
Soon Mickey must wear an iron helmet to keep from going blind. And then he
learns that the only permanent cure lies in the selfsame cave he visited
earlier… where a hungry grizzly awaits Mickey’s return.

As for our
piece de resistance: ah, now we reach the thrill we announced above. At a
whopping 37 pages, “Weird Science” is the longest-ever Gyro Gearloose adventure
ever to see print in the United States! While Scrooge McDuck is away on a
business trip, Gyro must defend Scrooge’s money bin from Magica De Spell. The
fight seems to be going swimmingly… until a frazzled future Gyro arrives in a
time machine, announcing that his “past self” is about to lose! Now it’s up to
two — and eventually three! — different eras’ Gyros to follow a Magica to her
hideout and outfox her before it’s too late. Dave Rawson and Massimo Fecchi
deliver a clash of magic and technology you’d do well not to miss.
