McFarlane’s Spidey #299 Cover at ComicLink
Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #299 cover art will be offered as part of the upcoming ComicLink February Featured Auction, ComicLink President Josh Nathanson has reported.
“This was only McFarlane’s second cover on the Amazing Spider-Man run, on which he would establish himself as one of the most popular and influential comic book artists of the modern era,” Nathanson said.
“This is one of only three black costume Spider-Man covers by McFarlane, which makes it a very special item. The other two – the #298 cover and the #300 cover – are in private collections, so this is really a unique opportunity to acquire one. Spider-Man’s time in the alien symbiote black costume is fondly remembered by readers and collectors, but one of the first things McFarlane did when he took over the run was get him back into the traditional red and blue suit. The symbiote would go on to find another, less resistant host, however, and become Venom, one of the characters most closely associated with McFarlane’s Spider-Man. This makes the small number of black costume, pre-Venom, Spider-Man appearances both significant and rare in McFarlane’s career. This and the fact that this is the cover art from only his second issue on the title make this an extremely exciting offering for an advanced collector,” he said.
“This is one of a number of exceptional pieces that are already included in the growing preview for the February auction,” he said.
“This important cover joins items like Jack Kirby’s full, 16 page ‘twice-up’ lead story from Thor #134 including the title splash and the best Kirby Galactus splash we’ve ever seen, a Steve Ditko Amazing Spider-Man #37 page featuring an iconic image of Spidey in action, an Alex Schomburg WWII-era All New Comics cover, X-Men art by Jim Lee (including an incredible Wolverine half-splash), a Gil Kane and John Romita Conan battle cover, four of the best covers from Howard Chaykin’s controversial Black Kiss series, Silver Age Hawkman and Flash art (a page from Hawkman’s second appearance by Joe Kubert), Silver and Bronze Age Gene Colan Daredevil art including the #25 title splash and the Daredevil Annual #1 title splash, a Bill Everett Sub-Mariner #58 action page with great Namor images, a Mike Zeck Web of Spider-Man page from the famous “Kraven’s Last Hunt” story arc, and more! Material is coming in daily from consignors seeking early preview exposure for their auction lots, so interested collectors may want to bookmark the growing preview page and come back often to see what’s new,” he said.
“We encourage sellers that have taken note of the outstanding auction results realized in prior ComicLink auctions to capitalize on the opportunity to let our aggressive bidders compete for your items, and to consign early for maximum preview exposure! As always, we will offer you an auction deal that can’t be beat, and we look forward to hearing from you and promoting your items to the fullest,” he said.
