After a lengthy absence, Golden Age comics legend Captain America was introduced to a new generation of readers in the landmark Avengers #4 (March 1964).

Cruising the North Atlantic in pursuit of the Sub-Mariner, another recently-returned Golden Age hero, the Avengers encounter a large fragment of ice with a man frozen inside. Hauling the ice block inside, they discover the body inside is that of World War II hero Captain America. Kept alive and in suspended animation due to the Super-Soldier Serum coursing through his veins, Cap revived memories of the apparent death of his Nazi-fighting partner Bucky.

In a final encounter with their evil nemesis Baron Zemo, Cap and Bucky were tied to an explosives-laden drone plane, and launched toward an Allied target. Freeing them from their bonds, Cap unsuccessfully attempted to defuse the bomb, then urged Bucky to jump to safety before it blew. Cap leapt free, only to see his young partner still clinging to the drone, insisting he "almost got it."

The last thing Captain America saw before losing consciousness and plunging into the icy waters below was the explosion then-believed to have ended Bucky’s life. Revived now into a totally changed world, Cap would have to adapt to this strange new "future" world, while remaining true to the core ideals that made him a heroic legend.

The Marvel Milestones: Captain America statue from Diamond Select recreates Cap’s pose from artist Jack Kirby’s cover image for Avengers #4. Sculpted by Gabriel Marquez, it is available in a limited edition of 1,500. DST’s Marvel Milestones series of statues commemorates key moments and events in the history of Marvel Comics.
