Before the United States of America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Marvel is sending its heroes back to the country’s founding.

The 1776 series presents a unique team-up that sees Marvel superheroes joining George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams on a mission to prevent the rewriting of history. Captain America will lead a team of heroes back to the American Revolution to protect the founding of the country.

The 1776 five-issue limited series is written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill. It will begin in November 2025.

“One of the (many) things that I like about the Marvel Universe is that it takes place in the real world, our world. It’s New York, or Chicago, not some imaginary location,” Straczynski said. “This also applies to our history, and the opportunity to view the events of 1776 through the lens of our characters, and to better understand the meaning of those events, and the sacrifices involved, was way too good to pass up. At a time when so much of American discourse has become factionalized, it is a good time to look back and see where this began, and what it still means today.”

The first issue features a main cover by Pete Woods and variants by Joe Quesada, Paulo Siqueira, Steve Rude, and an Amazing Spider-Man #583 homage cover by Phil Jimenez.
