Marvel Film & Series News Out of D23 Expo

Disney’s D23 Expo was held on September 9-11, 2022, in Anaheim, California, bringing Marvel Studios fans tons of exciting news with trailers and casting announcements for multiple upcoming projects.

The Werewolf By Night special was teased with a black and white trailer that pays homage to horror of the past. The trailer introduces Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell/the Werewolf and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, several other hunters, plus it gives a glimpse at Man-Thing. The special will arrive on Disney+ on October 7, 2022.

They dropped a trailer for Secret Invasion, with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) finally returning to Earth to face a dangerous, shapeshifting foe. The paranoid Fury wants to handle the situation with the Skrulls alone, but that doesn’t stop fellow and former allies Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), and James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) from joining the fight. Also starring Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, and Kingsley Ben-Adir, the series will begin sometime in 2023.

Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) has been added to the cast of Ironheart as Parker Robbins, aka the magical villain the Hood. He joins previously announced cast members Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, and Manny Montana, Alden Ehrenreich, and Lyric Ross in unnamed roles. The show is set to drop in 2023.

The Ke Huy Quan renaissance continues in Loki. The former child star from The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom recently starred in the absurdist dramedy Everything Everywhere All at Once. Now he’s joining the MCU for the second season of Loki as a Time Variance Authority employee. The series will arrive on Disney+ in the summer of 2023.

Captain America: New World Order announced the additions of Shira Haas (Shtisel) and Tim Blake Nelson to the cast. The fourth Cap film will star Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who took on the mantle of Captain America at the conclusion of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Haas is joining as Sabra and Nelson (who was previously in the MCU as Samuel Sterns in The Incredible Hulk) will portray the Leader. The movie will also feature Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) and Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The movie will arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced the lineup that will star in Thunderbolts. The crew of dangerous antiheroes will include Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Thunderbolts will close out Phase 5 of the MCU when it releases on July 26, 2024.

The announcements also confirmed that Matt Shakman will direct the new Fantastic Four movie. Shakman, who directed WandaVision, will not only helm the new iteration of the Fantastic Four, the project kicks off the MCU’s Phase 6. Fantastic Four is scheduled for release on November 8, 2024.
