Man-Thing 50th Anniversary Specials, New Villain
In March 2021, Marvel will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Man-Thing with three one-shots written by Steve Orlando with art by Francesco Mobili. Man-Thing will team up with several of Marvel’s A-list characters across the comics.
The one-shots begin with Avengers: Curse of the Man-Thing #1, which will mix superhero action and horror, featuring new villain, the Harrower.
“For decades, the Man-Thing has haunted the Florida Everglades. Now a new enemy has hijacked his body on a quest to take his incendiary abilities global,” the issue’s synopsis reads. “We wake to fear as gargantuan monoliths menace cities worldwide, with only the Avengers standing between the population of Earth and a planetwide inferno. Can they save Man-Thing in time to douse the fires? And does the man inside the thing, Ted Sallis, even want to be saved? Introducing a sensational new villain, The Harrower!”
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Orlando described the Harrower as “the body horror savant of both the plant and animal worlds” who studied biologists and botanists. Harrower will have bio-fission and bio-fusion powers to combine animals with other animals, plants with plants, or both.
In the second and third issues, Man-Thing will interact with Spider-Man and the mutants at Krakoa, with a new version of the Dark Riders introduced during the story.
“These three issues are a journey that draws together the biggest names in the Marvel Universe. But who else would you call when the Nexus of All Realities in unguarded and cities across the world face fire and fear? But Man-Thing is the star of this adventure, and it’s his journey that draws us through our three issues, catching the Avengers, Spider-Man, and Krakoa in the slipstream,” Orlando said.
In March 2021, Marvel will also release Man-Thing themed covers on Venom #32 (by Superlog), Amazing Spider-Man #62 (by Greg Land), and Captain Marvel #27 (by Bernard Chang).
