Lucius Fox is an intelligent, inventive man who is one of Bruce Wayne’s closest allies and works with him in both aspects of the superhero’s life. He is a high level executive at Wayne Enterprises and helps Batman by creating technology and gadgets. Lucius is also the father of Luke Fox (Batwing), Tiffany Fox (Batgirl), and Jace Fox (temporarily Batman).

Len Wein and John Calnan created Lucius Fox, and introduced him in Batman #307 (January 1979). Lucius is a successful businessman who works as the CEO and President of Wayne Enterprises. He uses the position to create and supply gadgets, armor, weapons, and vehicles that Batman uses to fight crime.

Lucius gained a reputation for his ability to save failing businesses and turn them into successes. Bruce Wayne hired Lucius to handle both his private finances and improve Wayne Enterprises. He also helped to manage things at the Wayne Foundation, giving Bruce the peace of mind that his philanthropic efforts were run by someone who cared about helping people.

Once Lucius helped the company stabilize and thrive, other organizations tried to hire him to improve their own situations. But since he was given such freedom and responsibility by Bruce and Batman, Lucius chose to stay instead.

Batman comics have explored the bond between Bruce and Lucius through new and flashback stories. Bruce originally formed the Outsiders to save Fox from Baron Bedlam. Later a flashback in Batman: Haunted Knight revealed that a young Bruce saved Lucius from being mugged. Then in another flashback, Lucius asked if he had considered starting a charitable foundation, planting the seed for the Wayne Foundation. Lucius designed the Batwing prototype armor and Bruce supported Luke becoming Batwing. When Bruce announced his support for Batman Inc., Lucius helped with resources, research, and prototypes.
