Live-Action Mulan Casts Its Heroine

The upcoming live-action adaptation of the Disney Renaissance classic animated film Mulan has found its titular heroine. Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, will be taking on the role of Fa Mulan in the film. Yifei has previously appeared in films such as The Forbidden Kingdom, Outcast, and The Chinese Widow

The animated Mulan debuted on June 19, 1998 and grossed $304 million in addition to earning both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. It told the story of the titular character, who disguises herself as a man in order to join the Chinese army and protect her country from the threat of the Huns, led by the villainous Shan Yu.

The live-action version of the Disney film will be directed by Niki Caro, known for her work directing Whale Rider and The Zookeeper’s Wife. She’s joined on the production staff by screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World) and producers Chris Bender, J.C. Spink, and Jason Reed. Mulan will add to Disney’s expanding live-action remake lineup, which includes Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin, when it arrives in 2019.
