Buckle in for more adorable destructiveness with Lilo & Stitch. Walt Disney Studios announced that the highly successful live-action reimagining is getting a sequel, and it is already in development.

The news came via a video on Instagram that follows Stitch as he disrupts the Disney Studios lot in his little pink convertible. The announcement came on June 26, in honor of Stitch’s alien designation as Experiment 626.

The sequel announcement isn’t too much of a surprise, considering the box office run that Lilo & Stitch is currently on. It scored the highest grossing four-day Memorial Day weekend box office opening and has a current worldwide total of $923 million.

Similar to other Disney live-action movies, Lilo & Stitch uses the original animated feature as the basis for the film and builds on it with new material. Stitch is an alien creature designed to be destructive who hijacks a spaceship and crash lands in Hawaii. There he meets Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a precocious girl who quickly falls for the peculiar “dog” she and her sister Nani (Sydney Agudong) find at the shelter. Lilo, Stitch, and Nani learn about Ohana just in time for the little guy to be pursued by Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance), and Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) and Pleakley (Billy Magnussen).

Chris Sanders, who voiced Stitch in the original movie, is back to voice him in the remake. Original Nani voice actress Tia Carrere and original David voice actor Jason Scott Lee returned to play new characters. The cast also includes Hannah Waddingham as Grand Councilwomen, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Amy Hill as Tutu, and Christian Yeung as Agent Zhou.

“The love that people have for Lilo & Stitch continues to grow, and the goal with this new retelling was for audiences to be able to enjoy these characters on the big screen again and hopefully have just as much fun watching it as we had making it,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said.

The original Lilo & Stitch animated film was released in 2002 to both commercial and critical success. It was followed by three sequels – Stitch! The Movie, Lilo & Stitch 2, and Leroy & Stitch – released in 2003 to 2006. The franchise expanded with three TV series and related specials that began in 2003, with the most recent in 2017.

Stitch and his human pal Lilo have also starred in multiple comic series and graphic novels, a children’s book series in which Stitch is a detective, multiple video games, pinball games, theme park attractions, and loads of merchandise.

Disney did not state when the live-action sequel will be released in theaters.
