DC and HBO have dropped the official teaser for the Lanterns TV show, previewing a gritty crime drama with superheroes.

In the show, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is considered one of the best members of the Green Lanterns and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) is a recent recruit. The two Lanterns will be “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” per the official synopsis.

The trailer begins with Hal teaching John how to be a Green Lantern – and does so with a dramatic lesson that puts John in a life or death situation. Much of the trailer is devoted to the friction in their relationship. John challenges Hal, claiming that he will be a better Lantern than his predecessor, Hal calls John “Junior” and John tells Hal that he’s “old and tired.”

We see Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald) who isn’t happy about the Green Lanterns’ interference in a case she’s investigating. There are shots of a crime scene on a football field, John being dragged into a warehouse, and what looks like a bloody cleanup. The superhero aspects are not the focal point in the trailer, shown mostly through a quick clip of the Green Lantern suit, Hal flying off, and John holding the lantern.

The trailer ends with a little levity as Hal tells John that he’s the only human Green Lantern, and drops an Easter egg for comic fans by referencing Ch’p.

The show was developed by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindeloff (Watchmen), and comics writer Tom King. They are co-writing and co-executive producing the series with Mundy serving as the showrunner.

The series will also star Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, and Garret Dillahunt as William Macon. Nathan Fillion will star in the series as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, reprising the role he originated in 2025’s Superman.

The eight-episode season is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new connected DCU. The mystery in Lanterns will continue into the first phase of their connected movies and TV shows, titled Gods and Monsters.

Lanterns will start streaming on HBO in August 2026.
