Klaus Janson has been working in comics since the 1970s as a penciler, inker, colorist, and writer. He is a celebrated artist who has produced piece after piece of beautiful, carefully detailed work. Janson is now the subject of an exhibition at the Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York City, which is open through April 11, 2026.

Janson had a long run as a Daredevil artist, originally inking Frank Miller’s pencils, then later taking over all art duties from penciling to coloring. He and Miller collaborated again on the Dark Knight Returns, a book that helped define the gritter, more mature comics that came out of the 1980s.

He worked with John Romita Jr. on many projects with runs in Wolverine, Black Panther, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Avengers. Janson also spent plenty of time with DC on Superman and Jemm, Detective Comics, and other Batman books.

As an inker, Janson displays the ability to adapt to the varying styles of different artists to convey their vision. He is well known for his inking work over the pencils of Bill Sienkiewicz, Gene Colan, Gil Kane, and Sal and John Buscema, in addition to Romita and Miller.

“I try to figure out what the intent of the penciler is, what he wants, and then I try to figure out what they actually need to get there,” Janson shared on the exhibit’s main page.

The exhibit at the Philippe Labaune Gallery includes original pieces from some of his most lauded work like The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, Batman: The Long Halloween, and Daredevil. In total, 100 pieces of his art will be displayed, including titles like Daredevil: End of Days, Gambit, Kull the Conqueror, Amazing Heroes, Ravage 2099, What If?, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Son of Satan, and Buyer’s Guide.

Through this exhibition, Janson’s fans can also purchase his original art. The gallery page is advertising art for sale from Daredevil, Dark Knight III: The Master Race, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, DC Comics Presents: Superman and Adam Strange, Superman, Jemm, Batman vs. Spawn, Batman: Death and the Maidens, Batman: The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween, Amazing Spider-Man, and more.

The Philippe Labaune Gallery is located at 534 West 24th Street.
