Robert Kirkman (the co-creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible) and David Finch (the artist who had notable runs illustrating Batman and New Avengers) are working together on the new comic series, Skinbreaker. Kirkman is writing and Finch is illustrating the book, with colorist Annalisa Leoni (Invincible Universe: Battle Beast) and letterer Rus Wooton (Transformers). The Skybound and Image Comic will debut in September 2025.

Skinbreaker is an eight-issue story about people fighting for survival against a multitude of threats. The tribe is headed by Chieftan Enor, whose advancing age is making it hard for him to continue wielding the Skinbreaker. Enor’s heir, Anok, is hesitant to become the Chieftan, leading to a power struggle while an even bigger threat is just outside of their village.

“I have wanted to work with David Finch for the entirety of my career,” Kirkman said. “We’ve gotten close many times over the years, but we wanted our collaboration to be something truly special. Skinbreaker is that series. I feel like this book is a high-water mark for both our careers. An action epic that is unrelentingly brutal but also contains a ton of emotion and heart. It’ll shock you and make you cry.”

Skinbreaker is a labor of love. It’s a story that resonated very deeply for me, and it’s been the privilege of my career to help bring it to life,” Finch said. “Everyone involved has put every last ounce of effort into this book and I couldn’t be more excited and proud to finally share it with you.”

The book features a main cover by Finch, an open to order portrait variant cover by Finch, and incentive variant covers by Ryan Ottley, Lorenzo De Felici, Eric Canete, and Tony Moore. There’s also a 1:1,000 incentive CGC-graded foil version of Finch’s main cover signed by Kirkman and Finch, a die-cut foil mask cover, and a 1:2,500 Finch original art sketch cover.

“This is the finest work of David Finch’s already masterful career,” Skybound SVP, Publisher Sean Mackiewicz said. “Together Robert Kirkman and David have created a savage, new world full of wonders and creatures that have to be seen to be believed. Only two absolute comic book legends working at the top of their game could create Skinbreaker.”

Skinbreaker #1 will be in comic shops on September 24, 2025.
