Key Signed Baseballs at Heritage’s Platinum Night
A number of key signed baseballs are set to be showcased at Heritage’s February Platinum Night event. This auction is already set to include a large amount of game-worn uniforms and bats, and the addition of these autographed baseballs will make Platinum Night an event sports collectors won’t want to miss. The Live Session of this auction will feature approximately 165 lots on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion in New York City, and the internet session will conclude via Extended-Bid on February 22 at HA.com.
Among the leather orbs featured at this event is a nearly pristine 1947-48 Babe Ruth single signed baseball, graded an 8.5 by PSA/DNA. Ruth’s signature is in blue fountain pen on the sweet spot, and is as smooth as it was in his earlier years. Many of the best examples of the Bambino’s signature are from the last few years of his life, and this is no different.
Memorabilia featuring players of the 500 Home Run Club will always catch the eye of a baseball collector, and Mel Ott’s signature will likely do the same. A late 1950s Mel Ott single signed baseball will hit the block in the Platinum Night auction. Ott racked up 511 dingers over his more than two decades in the game, was a 12-time All-Star and a 1933 World Series champion with the New York Giants.
One of the earlier baseballs featured in this auction is one signed by The Gentleman’s Hurler, Christy Mathewson. This 1919-1924 Mathewson single signed baseball is one of the finest examples of its kind, and Mathewson’s signature on the sweet spot has endured. Less than 10 examples of single Mathewson signatures have been offered by major auction houses in the last decade and a half, and this baseball rates among the finest of that group.
These are just a few of the many autographed baseballs and other memorabilia to be offered at Heritage’s Platinum Night. More information about these items and others can be found at the Platinum Night website.
