Julie Benz, Ron Perlman to Star in Horror-Comedy
A horror film icon is stalked by her own success in the new horror-comedy Horrified. It stars Julie Benz (Dexter), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Busy Philipps (Girls5eva), and Jim Rash (Community).
Horrified introduces Benz as a scream queen who returns to horror cons when her career is on a downward trajectory. But the pig-masked killer from the horror franchise she worked in is using her genre fame to harm her friends and fans. She must confront her past while trying to survive a real life killer.
The movie marks a return to horror for Benz. In Dexter, she played Rita Bennett the girlfriend of serial killer Dexter Morgan. She had a recurring role as the vampire Darla in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Benz was also in the cult horror-comedy Jawbreaker about a group of stereotypical mean girls who try to cover up the accidental murder of their friend.
Horrified is written and directed by Michael Zara, who makes his film debut after writing three seasons of Major Crimes.
“The idea of Horrified came to me over 12 years ago while I was attending a Midwest horror convention, so finally seeing it become a reality with a killer (pun intended) cast and producing team is truly thrilling,” Zara said.
Benz, Philipps, Perlman, and Tom Biolchini are executive producers on the movie. It will be produced by Randy Wayne and Talia Bella of Rebellium Films, with Zara and his company, Ghost Bunni.
The movie is set to shoot this summer.
