Jubilee Encounters Her Secret Family History in New Comic
Jubilee will learn more about her family history and Chinese heritage in Jubilee: Deadly Reunion #1. The book written by Gene Luen Yang (Shang-Chi) and illustrated by Michael YG (Iron Fist) will connect Jubilee with a long-lost cousin who reveals that he has mutant powers. The Marvel’s Voices one-shot will arrive in April 2026 during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Jubilation Lee will do anything for her family, so when a cousin she never heard of needs help, Jubilee is ready to find and save him. Along the way, she discovers that her cousin, Eason Cheung, may be hiding things from her – like the potential danger of his mutant power.
“Many Asian Americans feel a certain amount of separation between ourselves and our cultural heritage. Sometimes, by confronting that gap, we learn something about who we are. That’s exactly what Jubilee is going to do in Deadly Reunion. She’s going to visit San Francisco Chinatown, a place that seems like it ought to be comfortable for her, but isn’t,” Yang told AIPT.
“She’s a really positive character. She dresses in bright colors, she’s always friendly, and she loves to joke around. Underneath all that, though, is real tragedy. She suffered unimaginable loss at a young age. That seeming contradiction, the happy exterior and the tragic interior, makes for a deep character,” Yand said.
“I’m thrilled to have designed this new character,” YG said. “On the suit, the circular sound wave on his chest is his signature symbol, while the dots around him represent protecting the ones he loves with himself at the center. His resolute, unyielding gaze embodies his never-give-up spirit. I hope everyone will love this young man from Hong Kong, China.”
Jubilee: Deadly Reunion #1 features covers by Fan Yang, Ivan Tao, and Derrick Chew. It will be in comic shops on April 29.
