We are pleased to report that industry legend Joe Simon has teamed up with
Vanguard Publishing for The Comic Book Makers, an astonishing new book in
which, through real-life anecdotes and insights, Simon tells the compelling,
definitive history of the creators who gave us Superman, Captain America,
Archie, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man
and many of the others who have shaped
comic book history.

According to Vanguard Publisher J. David Spurlock,
“Readers have been enchanted with the Golden Age of American Comics through
Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller, The Amazing Adventures of
Kavalier & Clay
. Isn’t it time for
the real stories of the era, written by an eyewitness and participant of the
age? The Comic Book Makers is exactly such a book.”

After
creating Captain America, Simon became Marvel’s (Timely) first editor-in-chief
and teamed with Jack Kirby to produce not only Captain America, but also
The Boy Commandos, Newsboy Legion, Fighting American, Blue Bolt, Boys’ Ranch,
The Fly,
and the first Captain Marvel comic book. With Young
Romance
and Young Love, Simon & Kirby created the entire genre of
romance comics. Without Jack, Simon created and published Sick
Magazine, the original Spiderman, The Prez, Brother
Power
and The Geek, as well as edited for Fox, Archie, Harvey, and
Crestwood.

In his book, Joe Simon tells of the crime comics editor who
would himself be accused of a gruesome murder, the horror artist who was
periodically released from a mental hospital in order to meet his publishing
deadlines, the famous Senator Estes Kefauver, whose subcommittee investigated
comic books as a cause of juvenile delinquency, and dozens of other fascinating
personalities.

“The production quality of Vanguard’s books are
excellent,” said Simon. “David Spurlock takes great pride in his work. I am
really looking forward to a beautiful book, with top quality art and
photographic reproductions. I am sure everyone will be impressed with the
Vanguard edition.”
