Zelda “Jackie” Ormes is widely considered the first syndicated African
American female cartoonist. Her creations–Torchy Brown, Patty Jo ‘n’ Ginger,
and Candy appeared in as many as 14 Black-owned newspapers during the ’40s, ’50s
and ’60s.
