Jack Davis Original Artwork at Hake’s
A number of fantastic Jack Davis artworks are featured in the current Hake’s auction, which includes examples of his work from Mad and others.
Davis was one of the founding cartoonists for Mad when it started in 1952 but also did poster artwork for films such as It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and The Long Goodbye. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2003.
Among the baker’s dozen items in the auction is a piece of original book cover art from A Tale from Camp Crypt. The art features the notorious Crypt-Keeper character as he beckons the reader to join the frightened children. This piece, which is item number 1822, has been signed by Davis in the lower right corner.
For those more interested in Davis’ work from Mad, item number 1832 features a framed piece of original back cover art. This artwork was originally published in March 1983 and shows children hunting for buried treasure underwater, only to find atomic waste. This particular piece also comes with a small photo of Davis in his studio holding the original artwork.
Many other pieces of Davis’ art are available for bidding now, including some of his horror work and many other examples of his work for Mad. These can all be found at Hake’s website, and bidding ends on November 13, 2014.
