Iyanu Animated Series Renewed for Season 2
Iyanu the Child of Wonder will return for more magical adventures. Cartoon Network and HBO Max have renewed the Iyanu animated series based on Roye Okupe’s graphic novel for a second season. The series is also expanding with two feature films.
Set in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland, Iyanu introduces the titular teenage orphan who is studying Yoruba history and ancient arts when she unintentionally triggers her own divine power. With her new powers, Iyanu joins fellow teens Biyi and Toye on a journey to uncover the evil hiding in her homeland. During their quest, Iyanu will learn important truths about her past, present, and her destiny.
The second season will consist of ten episodes and is scheduled to air in 2026. The synopsis states that Iyanu “finds herself in the midst of a fierce conflict between Elu and the People of the Deep, led by a new formidable opponent. With various factions of Yorubaland vying for powerful divine artifacts that have reemerged, Iyanu strives to find a way to end the war and restore peace.”
The first movie connected to the series is the prequel The Age of Wonders, set 500 years before Iyanu’s time. It will be released later in 2025. Details for the second film have yet to be announced, however it was confirmed that the movie will debut in 2026.
Okupe is the showrunner and producer for the series. Based in Nigerian mythology, history, and culture, Iyanu features an all-Nigerian voice cast led by Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Okey Jude as her challenging friend Biyi, and Samuel Kugbiyi as her book loving friend Toye. The voice cast also includes Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori, who takes Iyanu as an apprentice; Blossom Chukwujekwu as Toye’s father Kanfo; Stella Damasus as Sewa, who trains Iyanu; Shaffy Bello as Emi – the One Mother; and Ike Ononye as voice council Elder Alapani.
“We’re incredibly inspired by the response to Iyanu and the connection it has made with audiences,” Lion Forge Entertainment’s CEO David Steward II said in a statement. “The opportunity to expand this world with a second season and two feature films is a testament to the power of meaningful storytelling and innovative creative collaboration. We’re grateful for the continued support of our partners at Cartoon Network and Max, and it’s been a lot of fun working with Roye to bring Iyanu to life and build the franchise.”
