Inside the Guide: Overstreet HOF – Jack Kamen

After his initial work for EC Comics, which came at the end of their “Pre-Trend” era on the final two issues of Modern Love, Jack Kamen quickly made himself a vital component of the company’s “New Trend” efforts.
He illustrated the very first “Old Witch” story (written by Al Feldstein) in Haunt of Fear #2 (#16/2) and frequently contributed to Crime SuspenStories and Shock SuspenStories. His classic “Squeeze Play” cover for Shock SuspenStories #13 (May 1954) was for Frank Frazetta’s only solo story at EC, and he also provided covers for final three issues of Crime SuspenStories.
Outside of his EC work, Kamen was known as one of the top “good girl” artists for his popular covers on Fox’s Zoot and Rulah and Four Star’s Brenda Starr, and he turned this to his advantage when his sexy “Kamen Girls” worked well for the Crime and Shock series. In addition, his art was seen in the George Romero – Stephen King film Creepshow, and on the cover of the Creepshow graphic novel.
