Updated 5:35 PM EDT Friday, May 16: The original comic art page featuring Wolverine’s brief first appearance from Incredible Hulk #180 closed at $657,250 including the 19.5% buyer’s premium. This transaction should be the highest price ever recorded for an interior panel page.

The page concluded its internet bidding session during the Thursday night, May 15, portion of Heritage Auctions’ May 15-17, 2014 Comics Signature Auction, which was followed by a live bidding session on Friday, May 16.

Pencil artist Herb Trimpe and inker Jack Abel’s final page from Incredible Hulk #180 features the first brief appearance of Wolverine in the issue’s last panel, and from that panel sprang the popular character whose 40th anniversary we celebrate in 2014.

Written by Len Wein and illustrated by Trimpe and Abel, the page was given by Trimpe to a teenager in 1983. It has remained in his possession ever since.

“Since he has not been an active collector, it was never known with certainty if this page even existed – until now,” Heritage said in their listing for the piece.

“Inspired by Trimpe’s generosity over thirty years ago, we’re very pleased to note that the majority of the after-tax proceeds from the sale of the artwork is being donated by our anonymous consignor — including a large portion to the Hero Initiative,” they said.

The ink, graphite, and blue pencil on Bristol board image area of this page is 10″ x 15″ and aside from some light overall paper aging, it’s in Excellent condition. It is inscribed and signed by Herb Trimpe at the lower left.

Wolverine went on to be featured in his first full appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 and then joined the X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1, which led to his status as a fan favorite in Uncanny X-Men, his own mini-series and ongoing titles, cartoons and feature films.

Editor’s note: Check back in next week’s Scoop for more details and a look at the auction as a whole.

For the 40th anniversary, Trimpe has just revisited the character for the Hero Initiative. Find out more about that in our In The Limelight section this week.

An interesting side-note on Wolverine’s brief first appearance is featured in our Industry News section this week.
