
In Memoriam: Robert Duvall
Actor Robert Duvall, who was known for his work in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and many other films died on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at his home. He was 95 years old.
Duvall was a seven-time Academy Award nominee, starting with his portrayal of the Corleon family consigliere Tom Hagen in The Godfather. He often played tough or authoritarian characters, including his role as the unflinching Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now. His work in the Vietnam War film earned him his second Oscar nod.

He was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California and spent much of his childhood in Annapolis, Maryland where his father served in the Navy. He attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, then served in the army from 1953 to 1954. After his service, Duvall moved to New York to study drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. He was in multiple plays and had small roles in movies and TV shows before his first major role as Boo Radley in the film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Duvall was in True Grit with John Wayne, the M*A*S*H movie, George Lucas’ THX 1138, and reprised Tom Hagen in The Godfather II. He was in the satirical Network, nominated for his third Oscar for The Great Santini, won an Oscar for playing a country singer in Tender Mercies, was in The Natural and the Lonesome Dove TV miniseries.

He was in Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise, played publisher Joseph Pulitzer in Newsies, portrayed Joseph Stalin in Stalin, was in Something to Talk About, and was in a film adaptation of The Scarlet Letter. Duvall played Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in The Man Who Captured Eichmann, and he wrote, directed, and starred in The Apostle, earning his fifth Academy Award nod for acting. He played an astronaut in Deep Impact, earned his sixth Academy Award nod for A Civil Action, and was in Gone in 60 Seconds.
Duvall directed and starred in Assassination Tango, played Robert E. Lee in Gods and Generals, was in the Western Open Range, Thank You for Smoking, and he was in the Broken Trail miniseries. He stayed active into his later years, appearing in Jack Reacher, A Night in Old Mexico, he got his seventh Oscar nomination for The Judge, he wrote, directed, and starred in Wild Horses, and Widows was one of his final roles.
In 2004, Duvall was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his work in film.
