to Hodgkin’s disease last Friday, October 25, at the age of 72. Harris, whose
film career had spanned over three decades, is remembered as being something of
a hell-raiser who had mellowed out considerably since the late ’70s. Some of his
diverse films included This Sporting Life, Camelot, Mutiny on the Bounty,
Unforgiven and Gladiator. He most recently played the long-bearded,
wizened Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
He will be seen in the upcoming sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets, set to open November 15. According to reports, Harris took this
role because of a threat from his 11-year old niece, who said she would never
speak to him again if he didn’t.
of the Rings: The Fellowship of
the Ring and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone seemed to dominate
movie conversations the world over. And, as the fates would have it, this year
seems to be moving along much the same track. With sequels to the two
blockbusters on the way, it looks like this holiday season will be full of
witches, wizards, elves and magic. For the whole story, from The New York
