In Memoriam: Mike Curtis
Former Baltimore Colts player Mike Curtis, died on Monday, April 20, 2020 at his home in St. Petersburg, FL. He was 77 years old.
Born in Washington, DC, Curtis attended Duke where he was an All-American, then he was drafted by the Colts in the first round of the ’65 draft. While he was with the Colts, they won the NFL championship in ’68 and won the first Super Bowl after the NFL-AFL merger in ’71.
He was instrumental in the Colts’ Super Bowl V victory over the Dallas Cowboys when he intercepted a pass with 59 seconds left on the clock. Jim O’Brien then nailed a game-winning field goal with five seconds left for a 16-13 final.
Curtis played for the Colts from 1965 to 1975. He played with the Seattle Seahawks in ’76, then played with the Washington Redskins from ’77 to ’78.
A fullback who became a linebacker, he became a two-time All-Pro and a four-time Pro Bowl player, and was an NFL 101 AFC Defensive Player of the Year.
Off the field, he wrote the book Keep Off My Turf in ’72 and later wrote the foreword for Ed Benkin’s The First 50 Super Bowls: How Football’s Championships Were Won.
