1950s film and television supervillain Lyle Bettger died on Wednesday,
September 24. He was 88.
The son of Franklin Bettger, who played third base for the St Louis
Cardinals, and one of the “Gas House Kids” group that included Dizzy Dean,
Bettger left school in his late teens to pursue acting.
Bettger is best known for his work in westerns such as The Lone Ranger
(1956) and Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). But he began his
anti-hero career in 1935’s Greatest Show on Earth, as an “elephant man” named
Klaus. Other film roles included the thriller Union Station (1950), No
Man of Her Own
(1950), Hurricane Smith (1952), Denver and the Rio
Grande
(1952), The Great Sioux Uprising (1953), Forbidden
(1953), Destry (1954), and The Sea Chase (1955).
His television work ranged from the Westerns Wagon Train (1957),
The Rifleman (1959), Laramie (1959) and Rawhide (1959), to
sporadic guest appearances on Hawaii Five-0.
Bettger retired from acting in 1980 when he and his wife, former actress
Mary Rolfe, moved to Hawaii. Wolfe and two sons survive him.
