Good Times and Laugh-In star Johnny Brown died on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. He was 84 years old.

His daughter Sharon announced his passing on Instagram, writing, “Our family is devastated… He was literally snatched out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet. So there will be more to say but not now. Dad was the absolute best. We love him so very much.”

In the early ‘70s, Brown appeared in three seasons of the sketch comedy show Laugh-In then he joined Good Times halfway into the second season as superintendent Nathan Bookman.

Born on June 11, 1937, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Brown grew up in Harlem where he started acting, singing, and dancing. He performed in nightclubs, moved on to Broadway, and sang with bands and recorded songs before landing his first onscreen role.

His first film role was in 1966’s A Man Called Adam, then he was in The Out of Towners, Maude, and The Rookies. In the late ‘70s, he was in Chico and the Man, Monster Squad, The Wiz, and provided multiple voices in the Plastic Man animated series.

From there, he did guest spots in Gimme a Break!, Archie Bunker’s Place, The Jeffersons, Fantasy Island, Punky Brewster, Moonlighting, and 227, and loaned his voice to Alvin & the Chipmunks.

In the ‘90s, Brown continued doing guest work on Martin, Family Matters, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Sister, Sister, Touched by an Angel, and Kenan & Kel, and he was in Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.

Brown’s later onscreen roles were in Town & Country, The Parkers, Everybody Hates Chris, Man in the Mirror, and In Da Cut.
