In Memoriam: Joan Lee
Joan Lee, the wife of Marvel legend Stan Lee, died on Thursday, July 6, 2017 in Los Angeles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she had suffered a stroke earlier this week and had been hospitalized. Joan was 93 years old.
“I can confirm that Joan Lee passed away this morning quietly and surrounded by her family,” a family spokesperson said in a statement. “The family ask that you please give them time to grieve and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
Joan and Stan had been married for 69 years and together they had two children – Joan Celia in 1950 and Jan, who died three days after her birth in ’53.
When Stan was celebrating his 75th anniversary in comics he shared the story of how he met Joan. After he got out of the Army, one of his cousins told him about a hat model named Betty, expressing the expectation that Stan would like her. Stan arrived at the place but Betty didn’t answer the door – Joan did.
“I took one look at her – and she was the girl I had been drawing all my life,” Stan said. “And then I heard the English accent. And I’m a nut for English accents! She said, ‘May I help you’ And I took a look at her, and I think I said something crazy like, ‘I love you.’ I don’t remember exactly. But anyway, I took her to lunch. I never met Betty, the other girl. I think I proposed to [Joan] at lunch.”
At the time, Joan had been unhappily married to a soldier, so she divorced the soldier and an hour later married Stan.
The loss has been felt throughout the comics community. “We are so saddened to hear about the loss of Joan Lee. We lost a member of the Marvel family today and our thoughts and prayers go out to Stan and his daughter Joan in this difficult time,” a statement from Marvel said.
Joan has been credited with helping to create the Fantastic Four. Stan had been depressed and considering an exit from comics when she encouraged him to write a comic he could be proud of and from there, the popular characters were created.
She helped develop Marvel TV, and voiced the Computer in Iron Man (1994), Miss Forbes on the Fantastic Four (1994), and Madame Web in Spider-Man (1996-1998). Last year she did a cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse. In 1987 she wrote the novel, The Pleasure Palace, about a man trying to build a luxury ocean liner while simultaneously wooing several women.
