Comic writer-artist-essayist Jesse Hamm died on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. His wife, Anna Sahrling-Hamm, announced on Twitter that he died due to a blood clot in his lungs.

He was a member of Portland’s Helioscope studio with Steve Lieber, Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin, and others.

Hamm’s first big mainstream work came in 2007 with Good as Lily, the graphic novel he drew with writer Derek Kirk Kim. At Marvel he worked on Hawkeye with Lieber, and at DC he worked on Batman ’66 with Parker. For Dynamite, Hamm and Parker collaborated on Flash Gordon: Kings Cross, featuring characters from King Comics Syndicate.

Hamm and Mark Rodgers co-wrote The Blessed Machine for Mad Cave. He was an artist on Dark Horse’s Plants vs Zombies series with Tobin and their collaboration in Vol. 18: Constructionary Tales will be out in July 2021.

Outside of comic writing and art, he wrote “Tips from Jesse Hamm” on Twitter that helped artists and writers looking to break into the comics industry. Using the social media platform, he kept his suggestions concise and clear, offering sound advice about the industry.
