
In Memoriam: Graham Greene
Actor Graham Greene, known for Dances with Wolves, died on Monday, September 1, 2025, following a long undisclosed illness. He was 73 years old.
Greene was a pioneering Indigenous actor who earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves.
He was a member of the Oneida people, born on June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada. Greene worked as an audio technician for rock bands, and in the 1970s he started acting on stage in Toronto and England. His over 180 roles in film and TV began in 1976 in Bei Shao Lin and then in the ’79 Canadian drama series, The Great Detective.

Greene was in Running Brave, Where the Spirit Lives, Clearcut, Thunderheart, Benefit of the Doubt, he appeared in episodes of Northern Exposure, Spirit Rider, and he did guest spots in Murder, She Wrote. He poked fun at Native American stereotypes for his role in Maverick the movie, he was in North, Lonesome Dove: The Series, the 500 Nations miniseries, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and The Green Mile.
He won a Grammy in 2000 for Best Spoken Word album for children for Listen to the Storyteller and starred in the Skins TV series about residents on a Lakota Sioux reservation. Greene starred in the Wolf Lake series, the Twilight movies, the Defiance series, had a recurring role in Longmire, and did episodes of Riverdale, The Last of Us, Reservation Dogs, Echo, and Tulsa King. He had multiple projects in the works at the time of his passing.
