Irish-Canadian actor Gerard Parkes, the man known for playing two very different characters called Doc, for The Boondock Saints and Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock, died Sunday, October 19. He passed away in a Toronto retirement home just days after his 90th birthday. His agent confirmed his passing.

Parkes was born in Dublin and moved to Canada in the 1950s. He spent over 50 years acting, beginning with a career on stage in 1948. His early performances include appearances in Canadian productions The Forest Rangers and The Littlest Hobo. He won the best actor award in 1968 at the Canadian Film Awards for his role in Isabel.

But for many kids he’ll remain the bespectacled inventor Doc in Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock. Doc was the solitary human on the show and could only see the Fraggles in extraordinary situations. It ran from 1983 to 1987, with an ABC special A Muppet Family Christmas in 1987.

He had a likeable gruffness that he shared in many roles such as in Short Circuit 2, It Takes Two, and Trapped in Paradise. Parkes was also well known for playing the Tourette-afflicted, proverb confusing owner of the bar in The Boondock Saints and its sequel. Parkes served as an uncle-like figure to the MacManus brothers, the title characters.

He leaves behind his longtime partner Sheelagh Norman.
