Saturday at Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills,
California. He was 78.
Though his portrayal of Peter Stirling in the
Francis the Talking Mule movies (see this week’s Did You Know section) is
considered his greatest commercial success, O’Connor spent his entire life–from
his formative years as the son of vaudevillian parents to his final film
performance in 1997’s Out to Sea–as the consummate performer. His
musical roles include Make ‘Em Laugh, There’s No Business Like Show
Business and Anything Goes. In 1957, he attempted to fill the
larger-than-life shoes of silent film star Buster Keaton in a tepidly received
biopic, The Buster Keaton Story.
