Actor and academic Bruce Hyde, known for playing the original lieutenant on the Enterprise in Star Trek, died. He passed away on October 13, 2015 after battling throat cancer. Hyde was 74 years old.

Hyde studied communications and language, specifically ontology. He worked as professor emeritus of communication studies at St. Cloud State in Minnesota. He also served as Artistic Director for Theatre L’Homme Dieu, St. Cloud State’s summer theater program.

In Star Trek he played Lt. Kevin Riley in the 1966 episodes “The Naked Time” and “The Conscience of the King.” Hyde’s first role was on the show The Trials of O’Brien in 1965. A year later he had a busy year in Dr. Kildare, Vacation Playhouse, That Girl, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Recruiters. His final role was as a mysterious man in The Confession of Lee Harvey Oswald in 2010.
