Actor Anthony Stewart Head, known for shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso, has died. His daughters, Emily and Daisy, announced that he passed away due to complications of pneumonia, while surrounded by family. He was 72 years old.

In a statement, the sisters wrote that, “It has been and forever will be, an honor and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

Head was best known for playing Rupert Giles, the Watcher and father figure to Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He starred in all seven seasons of the show from 1997 to 2003. Head was also known for recurring appearances in the sketch comedy show, Little Britain, he played King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, and was former football club owner Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso.

Born on February 20, 1954, in London, his parents were actress Helen Shingler and Seafield Head, a documentary filmmaker and founder of Verity Films. Head studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and had a long career acting on stage, performing in musicals like The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell, and Chess.

His onscreen career began in 1978 with guest starring appearances in Enemy at the Door and Lillie, then he starred in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Head became famous in the United Kingdom in Nescafe coffee commercials. He and Sharon Maughan played a couple in the romance-themed coffee commercials that ran from 1987 to 1993.

Head starred in the short-lived VR.5 series, loaned his voice to the Doctor Who audio series, and voiced Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer video games. He was in Imagine Me & You, appeared in Doctor Who, played Sir Walter Elliot in the Persuasion TV movie, had a cameo in Sweeney Todd, and starred in The Invisibles miniseries. Head starred in Repo! The Genetic Opera, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Iron Lady, and Dominion.

He voiced Alfred Pennyworth in Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, and joined BBC Radio’s long-running drama, The Archers, as Robin Fairbrother. His later roles included The Canterville Ghost, reprising Giles for Slayers: A Buffyverse Story podcast, and his last role was in Upgraded in 2024.
