One of the most intriguing series to emerge from the resurgence of horror comics in the early 1970s was Marvel’s Man-Thing. After a fairly ordinary origin tale (by lumbering swamp monster standards, anyway), the creative reins were passed off from its creators to others.

Under the guidance of new writer Steve Gerber, Man-Thing quickly became a showplace for biting social commentary and observance of the human condition, filtered through the eyes of the title character.

Out of this mix emerged a “throw-away” character from an alternate dimension, who refused to be discarded. A cult following sprang up, and inspired Gerber, with Marvel’s blessing, to bring back the irascible, anthropomorphic water fowl know as Howard the Duck. Howard starred in his own comic book and short-lived B&W magazine series in the ‘70s, a big-screen bomb helmed by the legendary George Lucas in the ‘80s, and a recent comic book revival.

The Howard the Duck statue from Diamond Select is sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios, and is available in a limited edition of 1,000.
