Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight, is an expert detective, proficient in martial arts and armed combat, and has supernatural abilities derived from his connection to the Egyptian god Khonshu. He was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin and made his first appearance 50 years ago in Werewolf by Night #32 (August 1975).

As the rebellious son of a studious Jewish rabbi, Spector grew disgusted by his father’s pacifistic ways and viewed him as a coward. He started out as a heavyweight boxer before joining the US Marines and later the CIA. After leaving the intelligence agency, Spector becomes a strong and skilled mercenary, renowned for his willingness to do anything if the price is right.

While working for an African mercenary in Egypt, Spector stumbles upon an ancient temple where artifacts included a statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Following a fight, in which Spector is left for dead, Egyptians who worship the ancient gods carry him to their temple. Khonshu appears to Spector in a vision, offering him a second chance at life if he becomes the god’s avatar on Earth. Deciding to become a crimefighter, Spector creates a silver cloaked costume and becomes Moon Knight.

Back in the United States, Spector used his mercenary savings to support his private war and set up shop in New York City. To distance himself from his past, he created the persona of millionaire entrepreneur Steven Grant. Although to entice lower level contacts, he also invented the identity of New York cab driver Jake Lockley. Unfortunately, juggling his different personas and the mental trauma caused by various battles caused him to suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Throughout his comic career, Moon Knight briefly joined the Defenders and battled Cyclone alongside Spider-Man, and Crossfire with the Thing. He also amassed a rogue gallery that included such villains as Midnight Man, Morpheus, Stained Glass Scarlet, and Black Spectre. Since his debut in 1975, Moon Knight has appeared in dozens of comics, along with appearances in animated series and numerous video games. The supernatural, super-powered crimefighter has also appeared in his own TV series on Disney+.
