High Grade Strange Tales Run at ComicConnect
In the late 1950s, Jack Kirby breathed new life in to the post-Comics Code Strange Tales when he returned to Marvel’s ranks after 17 years away. “The King” revamped the title to reflect the trend of gruesome, Atomic Age monsters that appeared on drive-in movie screens across the nation.
Along with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Kirby imagineered numerous permutations of the giant, oddly-named creatures that would appear on comic covers before once-again changing styles upon the birth of the Silver Age of comics.
The title went on to become the stomping grounds for some of Marvel’s more psychedelic fare; The Human Torch, Doctor Strange, and Nick Fury all called the series home for a time. After a brief hiatus, Strange Tales would go on to premiere new characters like Brother Voodoo and Adam Warlock well into the ‘70s.
“We are very pleased to offer this run of Strange Tales,” said Rob Reynolds, Director of Consignments. “All of the copies are high grade and hail from respected pedigrees and many are quite rare and very difficult to obtain in good condition.”
Examples include Strange Tales #110 CGC 9.0 (first Dr. Strange), #135 CGC 9.4 (first Nick Fury , Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.), #126 CGC 9.2, #115 CGC 9.2, #53 CGC 8.5 Northford, #39 CGC 8.0 River City, Annual #2 CGC 9.2 Don and Maggie Thompson, #101 CGC 8.5, and dozens more.
This title has a little bit of something for everyone, horror, science-fiction, classic superhero action, far-out cosmic magic, giant creatures, and some very experimental concepts.
“We expect there to be a great amount of excitement surrounding this wonderful collection come auction time and we welcome you to seek out issues that appeal to your personal favorite era of the history of Marvel Comics,” Reynolds said.
The auction ends over two nights, August 28 and August 29, 2014 at 7 PM EDT.
