Heritage Trading Card Game Auction Reaches $4M
Heritage’s Trading Card Games Signature Auction on November 6-7, 2021, brought in a total of $4,055,742. Not only did it surpass $4 million, it also saw a 100% sell through rate by both value and lots sold.
As expected, the top lot was the sealed Pokémon First Edition Base Set Booster Box, which rose to $312,000. The rare Booster Box was released in early 1999, containing 36 booster packs with a total of 396 cards. It is the sixth First Edition Base Set Booster Box that Heritage has sold for over $300,000.
“We had high hopes for this box and for the auction overall, and both exceeded our expectations,” Heritage Trading Cards Games Consignment Director Jesus Garcia said. “But hitting a number like this is incredible. This result is further proof that Pokémon continues to be a great collectible, and that the most serious collectors know they will find what they’re looking for in our auctions.”
In all, seven lots went beyond the six-figure mark. A Pokémon Blastoise #009/165R Test Print “Gold Border” foil CGC 6.5 sold for $216,000. From an early printing when Wizards of the Coast was bringing Pokémon to the English market, this card has Magic: The Gathering on the back.
An open Pokémon German First Edition Base Set distributors case more than doubled its preauction estimate when it realized $156,000.
A sealed Magic: The Gathering Unlimited Edition Booster Box was the game’s top seller when it went for $168,000. This booster Box is from the third printing Unlimited Edition.
“The demand for Magic: The Gathering continues to grow,” Garcia said. “To find a sealed Booster Box from this Unlimited Edition printing is an unquestioned rarity. This is the kind of lot that can become the centerpiece of any serious collection.”
Also from Magic, a sealed Unlimited Edition Starter Deck Box and an Alpha Edition Black Lotus each went for $156,000.
Other top sales were a Pokémon VS Tropical Mega Battle Complete Deck CGC-graded for $108,000, a Magic Alpha Edition Sealed Starter Deck for $108,000, Mark Poole Magic Alpha Edition “Island Sanctuary” card painting original art for $66,000, Pokémon French First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box for $55,200, Magic Antiquities Edition Sealed Booster Box for $55,200, Magic Antiquities Edition Sealed Booster Box for $55,200, and a Yu-Gi-Oh! Minerva, The Exalted Lightsworn #008 Championship Series card BGS GEM MINT 9.5 for $34,800.
