Heritage will host their next Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction on December 10-11, 2022. The year-end event contains many impressive highlights, including key art by Mike Grell and Steve Ditko, multiple Justice League of America and Spectre lots, and more.

One of the centerpieces, is the All Star Comics #58 original cover art by Mike Grell featuring the first appearance of Power Girl, and the defeated forms of Green Lantern, Wildcat, Flash, and Doctor Fate. Released in 1976, this issue marked the first time the Justice Society of America returned to their own title, which had been cancelled in 1951. This is the first time Grell’s cover has come to market.

Steve Ditko’s Amazing Spider-Man #29 story page 14 original art depicting four panels of Spider-Man fighting Scorpion, and Dave Stevens’ The Rocketeer Special Edition #1 story page 10 showing the hero in his trademark helmet are among the top art lots.

“After decades of being a comic book and comic art collector, I am thrilled to curate my first comics auction at Heritage,” Heritage Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said. “The comic art in this sale is of remarkable quality – and every page is fresh to the market, as are the comic books. And if you’re a fan of DC Comics, this is the ultimate auction.”

Heritage is selling several Justice League of America pages that pair the DC heroes with their Golden Age and Earth-2 counterparts. Ernie Chan’s original cover for issue 135 shows the JLA, JSA, and heroes of Earth-S. There are two George Pérez covers, including issue 195 with a JLA/JSA crossover featuring the Secret Society of Super-Villains, and the cover of issue 207 which is packed with the JLA, JSA, All-Star Squadron, and Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate.

The Spectre casts a long shadow in the auction with multiple pieces of art and key comics, such as More Fun Comics #52 CGC 8.5 with the first appearance and origin of the Spectre, which is one of only three graded at 8.5 or higher. The art is led by Murphy Anderson’s Showcase #64 original cover art with a dramatic image of the Spectre, Neal Adams’ The Spectre #5 original cover on which the titular character holds people in his fists while others flee at his feet, and Jim Aparo’s Adventure Comics #439 splash page 1 with Spectre looming over people that are being crushed by snakes.

Key comics include Captain America Comics #3 CGC 8.0 early Cap issue with Stan Lee’s first credited story and a cover by Alex Schomburg, and Pep Comics #27 CGC 8.5 with an early Archie appearance and Veronica Lodge’s second appearance.

Additional art highlights are Neal Adams and Dick Giordano’s World’s Finest #201 cover that pits Superman against Green Lantern as Doctor Fate surveys the situation, and Dave Cockrum and Klaus Janson’s Marvel Super Special #15 Star Trek: The Motion Picture story page 5 art featuring Captain Kirk.
