Heritage Comic & Comic Art Auction Rises to $22.6M
Heritage’s Comic & Comic Art Auction was a banner event that ended with a total of $22,653,352. The sale was held on June 26-29, 2025, offering impressive rarities like the cover of Action Comics #1 and a key Frank Frazetta science fiction cover.
Frazetta’s Famous Funnies #214 Buck Rogers cover realized $1,035,000. The art shows Buck Rogers and his companion about to be shot as their ship hurtles toward the moon. It is one of eight Buck Rogers covers that Frazetta provided for Famous Funnies and is famously considered an inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars. The cover was offered at auction for the first time.

“Frank Frazetta is universally acknowledged as one of the premier artists in the comic world, and his work has been eagerly collected for decades,” Heritage Vice President Barry Sandoval said. “This piece is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic covers of all time, and the final result certainly validates that.”
The comic book sales were led by The Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 9.2 with the titular hero’s debut that sold for $780,000. Fantastic Four #1 White Mountain pedigree CGC 9.2 featuring the team’s first appearance rose to $600,000.
Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes daily comic strip from November 29, 1985, featuring the first appearance of Spaceman Spiff, sold for $480,000. Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #311 cover portraying the hero reflected in Mysterio’s helmet reached $456,000.
“I knew our comic art selection was pretty special, but it’s always gratifying when the bidders agree,” Sandoval said. “The first 30 lots in the comic art section averaged $168,000 per lot, and it seemed like every one of those brought a furious bidding war. Between comic art and comic books, we had 27 lots over $100,000.”
The CGC-encapsulated front and back cover wrap for Action Comics #1 sold for $408,000. It set a new record for a cover-only sale, smashing the $20,000 total that was achieved for the cover of Flash Comics #1 in January 2025, per GPAnalysis.com.
Jock’s Detective Comics #880 cover of the Joker, depicting him with a rictus grin, Bat-symbols in his eyes and bats flying from the top half of his face went for $288,000.
Other top sales included Whiz Comics #2 (#1) CGC 7.0 for $288,000, Steve Ditko’s The Amazing Spider-Man #25 splash page for $288,000, Mike Zeck’s Marvel Super-Heroes Secret War #3 cover of Spider-Man vs. X-Men for $264,000, and Todd McFarlane and Rick Magyar’s Spider-Man #11 story page 20 for $216,000.
