Harry Potter TV Show Casts Its Harry, Hermoine, and Ron
Three future heroes are heading to Hogwarts. HBO’s Harry Potter TV series finally has its Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, and Ron Weasley.
Similar to the film franchise, the TV show has cast a trio of newcomers in the starring roles. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermoine, and Alastair Stout has the role of Ron. Warner Bros. released a photo of the young stars to accompany the announcement, showing the kids grinning for the camera in a woodsy setting.
Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod released a statement with the announcement. “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” they said.
Warner Bros. embarked on a massive casting call for the lead stars that began in September 2024 and ran through October. They sought children from the UK and Ireland who would be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025. Given the popularity of the book and film franchise, they expected thousands of auditions. In the end 32,000 children auditioned for the three lead characters.
Several of the important adult roles were cast before McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout joined the show. John Lithgow will play Professor Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer stars as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape, Nick Frost will portray Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon stars as Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse will portray Argus Filch.
According to the producers and showrunner, the Harry Potter show will be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels. While the film franchise adapted the story and tone well, a lot of secondary and tertiary plots were not included given the time constraints of a film’s runtime. This included expanded storylines for the Marauders and the ghosts of Hogwarts, Harry and the Weasleys visiting the magical hospital, Barty Crouch Jr.’s backstory, Hermoine’s attempts to help house elves, Ron and Hermoine as prefects, Neville Longbottom being a potential chosen one, Tom Riddle’s backstory, the relationship between Lupin and Tonks, and Dumbledore’s backstory, among others.
The seven-book series was published from 1997 to 2007, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (later renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and ending in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The film franchise included eight movies (the final book was split into two parts), debuting in 2001 and running through 2011. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint originally played Harry, Hermoine, and Ron, respectively.
The Harry Potter TV series does not currently have a release date, but it is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
