Starting with humble beginnings and ending as one of the top grossing franchises in the world, Harry Potter has proven to be one of the most popular book series in history. When the book was first issued, only a mere 300 copies were distributed and most of those primarily went to schools and libraries. Not even the most psychic of individuals could have predicted that the book would go on to sell over 325 million copies and translated into 60 different languages.

When creator J.K. Rowling first began trying to publish the series, not a publisher in town would take her manuscript. All except Bloomsberry, who gave her £3,000, enough to release the book in very limited print. Heritage Auctions is now offering a fine piece of Harry Potter history, perfect for the many “muggles” who have Potter fever. The copy of the true first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is being offered in the upcoming Heritage Auction: Rare Book and Manuscripts held on October 25-26, 2007 in Dallas, Texas. Its estimated value is $15,000-$20,000.
