Hake’s scored a big win in their recently completed premier Auction #231 by setting a new house record at $2.9 million. Baseball memorabilia was among the categories that did especially well with competitive bidding that drove items beyond their estimates. Hake’s reported that the second round of items from the Paul Muchinsky Collection and the first group of lots from the Black Ball Collection achieved strong interest from collectors.

A very rare Babe Ruth “1915 Champions” Boston Red Sox Royal Rooters button took the number one spot for baseball items when it sold for $52,367. This piece from the Paul Muchinsky Collection features a group photo of Ruth and his 21 teammates, team owners, and trainer adorned on a red display stocking. Only two examples of this button are known to exist and of those, this example is the only one that retains its original issue stocking.

A 1930 Homestead Grays real photo postcard exceeded its top-end preauction estimate when it reached $23,364. Featuring future Hall of Famers Oscar Charleston, Judy Johnson, Smokey Joe Williams, and Cumberland Posey, it is one of only two known examples. It hailed from the Black Ball Collection.

The 1911 New York Lincoln Giants real photo postcard SGC 20 Fair featuring Hall of Famers Sol White, Pop Lloyd, and Louis Santop hammered for $18,172. This is the earliest known image of the Lincoln Giants baseball club and White’s only known card appearance. Coming from the Black Ball Collection, it is the only known example, which was offered publicly for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The 1910-1912 Sweet Caporal Cigarettes high grade complete set of 204 buttons exceeded the $10,000 estimate when it achieved $12,850. The 7/8” pins from the Paul Muchinsky Collection feature many Hall of Famers like Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker, and Chief Bender, among many others.

A Babe Ruth signed 1930s original photo by Cosmo-Sileo Studios surpassed its estimate by selling for $11,033. The silver gelatin 8” x 10” photo shows Ruth in his New York Yankees uniform and is signed in black ink. It came from the Chuck Bruce Hall of Fame Collection.

The 1934 Japan Tour related Babe Ruth rare celluloid scorer “R.R. Mizuno & Bros./Osaka-Tokyo-Kobe” brought $10,452, beating its estimate. The 1-3/4” double-sided celluloid scorer has five counter wheels around the edges and attached strap. Another piece from the Paul Muchinsky Collection, it is the only example known to Hake’s Auctions.

A circa 1961 Mickey Mantle rare press button nearly doubled its estimate by reaching $9,451. This 3-1/2” button from the Paul Muchinsky Collection is likely a press version due to the colored background of New York Yankees symbolism. It is the only example known to Hake’s.

All items include an 18% buyer’s premium. Lists of the top selling items in Part I and Part II of the auction are available on Hake’s website.
