In the thriving market of original art, collectors seek the opportunity to purchase pages from key books and pages with big name characters by the hobby’s most talented artists. Hake’s Auction #234 has one such page from a notable Bronze Age Marvel key.

The Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 page 11 original art by Mike Zeck features three of Marvel’s most prominent characters. Split into seven panels, the page shows Incredible Hulk smashing through a wall to confront Enchantress who places him under her thrall, which causes him to collapse as Captain America arrives. Hulk appears in all but the last panel, Enchantress is in each panel, and Cap appears in the second to last panel. Inked by John Beatty, the art appears on a 15” x 22” artboard. The issue was published in December 1984.

Secret Wars #8 is a hot item in the collecting market as it told the origin story of Spider-Man’s famous black costume. Art from this issue made headlines in January 2022 when the page that reveals Spidey’s costume sold for $3.3 million and another page from the issue rose to $288,000.

The original art section in Hake’s Auction #234 covers everything from this Bronze Age Marvel key to 1940s Buck Rogers comic strips. Bidding on the original art and many other sections of the auction is open now through March 15-16, 2022, at hakes.com.
