Hake’s Jeff Jacob Collection Part 2 Auction Rises to $1.2M; Sets New Records
The Jeff Jacob Collection represents the pinnacle in action figure collecting with many of the highest graded, rarest, and most desirable figures, playset, and vehicles from the late 1970s to the ‘80s. When Hake’s started offering the Jeff Jacob Collection in January 2025, top tier collectors pushed the auction to $1.45 million, becoming the first action figure specific auction to eclipse $1 million. Hake’s just closed the Jeff Jacob Collection Part 2 Auction on May 15, realizing $1.2 million in sales. With that total, Hake’s became the first and only auction house with back to back action figure auctions over $1 million.
The Darth Vader 12-back-A AFA 80 double-telescoping lightsaber figure sold for $130,095, setting a new record for a production action figure of any type or toy line. This example is a rare early figure featuring a lightsaber that has a second extendable piece, which was only available in the first wave of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi figures. According to the AFA Population Report, nine examples have been graded by AFA with only four graded AFA 80, and just one higher.
The auction produced some surprise results like the Return of the Jedi Jabba the Hutt action playset AFA 85 that soared well beyond the $2,000 estimate when it reached $38,940. Containing “Two Star Wars creatures and one platform with prisoner gates,” it includes a movable figure of Jabba the Hutt and Salacious Crumb. The platform base has monster head attachments used to open the gates and the set includes additional Jabba’s pipe bowl accessory piece. It is one of nine examples graded AFA 85 with none higher, per the AFA Population Report.
The Power of the Force Yak Face 92-back AFA 90 from Kenner Canada went for $23,737. This figure is the most desirable of the last 17 vintage Star Wars figures because it was only released in foreign markets. The card is unpunched and it is the first time Hake’s has offered one in this high grade. Per AFA, only eight are graded and this is the highest graded example.
The Boba Fett mailer envelope and figure AFA 85 more than quadrupled the estimate to hammer for $22,066. The lot features the original brown paper mailer envelope with “Maple Plain Company” return address and sealed baggie with the Boba Fett action figure, introductory slip, and large Kenner catalog booklet. This was the first time Hake’s sold the very rare mailer envelope, which is one of only five graded examples with none higher in AFA’s Population Report.
The Darth Vader TIE Fighter AFA 85 flew to a total of $21,240. Based on the iconic Star Wars ship, it has flashing laser light and space sounds. This is just the third time Hake’s has offered one, and this example is one of seven in the grade, which is the highest graded by AFA.
A Star Wars Action Display Stand AFA 80 brought $16,549, well over the $10,000 estimate. This version of the Action Display Stand was not a regular release Kenner toy, being produced solely as a “Special Offer” item for larger retailers. The mail-away version came with a sticker label bearing the names of Kenner’s first 12 Star Wars figures; however, this 1979 release featured a new sticker as additional figures had been added to the toy line. As such, it was not widely available to consumers.
The Lili Ledy Return of the Jedi/El Regreso Del Jedi Squid Head 14-back AFA 40 bested its $10,000 estimate to sell for $15,616. The very rare figure with Spanish text by Lili Ledy is the only example graded by AFA.
Leading the charge for G.I. Joe results was the Attack Vehicle & Heavy Artillery Laser Series 3 vehicle AFA 75 that reached $12,980. This Sears exclusive two-pack from Hasbro is very hard to find in factory sealed condition. In fact, it is one of just six examples graded by AFA.
