Hades is setting out on his own Greek mythological quest in Dynamite’s next Disney Villain comic series.

Hades, aka Lord of the Underworld, joined the roster of Disney baddies in 1997’s Hercules. His striking look and comedic skills made him a favorite among Disney film fans and now he’s turning up the heat in his own comic.

The story begins when Hades isn’t invited to the weekly brunch at Mount Olympus and feels the need to retaliate for the slight by destroying his fellow deities. To do so, he tries to take the Golden Fleece of Colchis – which is guarded by a dragon and soldiers. Since the task looks rather difficult, Hades gathers a team of minions and allies to help on his quest. They include the spider-girl Arachne, emo singer Orpheus, a childlike brute Minotaur, and winged Icarus.

The comic is being written by Elliott Kalan, whose comedic writing includes Mystery Science Theater 3000 and The Daily Show. He is joined by artist Alessandro Ranaldi (Zorro) who brings what Dynamite calls, a “kinetic style and approach to characters.”

“I was already a teenager when Hercules came out, and a little old – according to my friends – to go see it in the theaters,” Kalan said. “So of course, I saw it in the theaters anyway, because Disney had been on an epic roll for the past decade or so, and I really enjoyed it.”

“I took to Hades right away. I’ve always loved villain characters, and I’m a sucker for demons and devils, so instantly he was my favorite character in the film. Plus, he was the funniest one there,” Kalan added.

Disney Villains: Hades will feature covers by Karen S. Darboe, Jae Lee, Trish Forstner, Francesco Tomaselli, and Alessandro Ranaldi. The first issue is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2023 PREVIEWS catalog.
