Glenn: Pizza Boy of the Walking Dead
Note, spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead TV show. If you did not watch the Sunday, October 25, 2015 episode, here is your chance to avoid spoilers.
Last Sunday, AMC aired one of the most memorable, talked about episodes in The Walking Dead’s history. The buzz began with ominous hints that Glenn, everyone’s favorite supply runner, might die. About 40 minutes into the episode Glenn was pulled into a sea of walkers after Nicholas committed suicide and fell on him. Fans are arguing passionately over the ensuing, gut wrenching scene and whether or not Glenn will survive.
Glenn’s character on the show closely mirrors how he is in the comic. Glenn was introduced in the second issue of The Walking Dead, in 2003. The 22-year-old was raised in Macon, Georgia and led an unassuming life. He worked as a pizza delivery boy dealing with financial difficulties of car and rent payments and an estranged relationship with his parents.
After the zombie apocalypse, he proved time again to be a very resourceful member of the group. Using the knowledge he gained about Atlanta while delivering pizza, Glenn put himself in danger to go on supply runs in the city. He also showed himself as a jack of all trades, able to hotwire cars and siphon fuel for their vehicles. He had an optimistic attitude and humorous outlook. He was loyal to Rick Grimes as the leader of their group and served as an ally and confidante. He often did whatever was needed to keep people in the group safe.
Once his group left Atlanta they encountered the Greene family. Glenn fell in love with Maggie Greene and the pair eventually got married. Later they had a son they named Hershel, after her father, and adopted Sophia after her mother died.
His two flaws were lack of physical strength and impulsivity that led to reckless decisions. Sometimes he panicked under pressure, which was seen when the Governor kidnapped him, Rick, and Michonne. He was stunned by fear and didn’t regain control of himself until he was rescued. Though he had killed innumerable walkers, he tended to shy away from violent situations with other people, such as killing the Hunters and Scavengers. He never killed a living person.
