Illustration House in New York closed their 17th Porch Auction with some amazing
results.
Illustration House is known for offering the very best in
original art from magazines, books, advertising and also comics. They manage to
assemble some of the most esoteric and interesting items for every auction event
they hold.
One of the odd highlights for this auction was the
original art for the cover of the October 26-Novemeber 1 TV Guide. With
the retirement of Dan Rather, this piece brought some exceptional bidding. Done
in colored pencil and watercolor by Richard Amsel, this wonderful reminder of a
different time when three networks ruled TV News brought $2,362.
No
piece stood out in the auction as much as an original work by noted artists
George Petty. This watercolor, gouache, and pastel of a woman in a red bathing
suit on the phone realized $13,500. Its sale is a testament to the skill and
craft of Petty as well as the individualized nature of the auctions that
Illustration House holds.
